Keep Your Camera Out!

I have been doing a 365 project this year where I take at least one picture a day everyday for the whole 366 days this leap year. So far, so good. Some days I am camera happy, other days it feels like a chore, but I know that I will love to look back at my year in pictures and feel so happy that I committed myself to this challenge. I have not had my camera in my camera bag once this year and having it out is a constant reminder that there are moments happening right under my nose that I should document. After this year in pictures is over, I will make a yearbook that will most certainly be a treasured keepsake. I probably won’t include a picture from each day in the album, but there won’t be a shortage of images, that’s for sure.

So, I encourage you to keep your camera out. Even if you aren’t taking a picture everyday, you will see your camera there and you will most likely be inclined to take a picture or two. Sure, you can use your iphone, but really, what then? Can you make an album with iphone pictures? Will they look good bigger than a 4×6? Well, I don’t know because I haven’t tried, but I can guarantee that they won’t look nearly as good as what comes out of your camera. Even if you just have a point and shoot!

Just don’t miss out on your lives. Slow down, take some pictures, live in the moment and capture real moments. Like this example below:

This was me at 11 years old. Crying and devastated over having to clean my room. (I think that was my look of “I am going to kill you for taking my picture!”) But, I remember that day!  I only remember it because there is this picture that my sister (who thought I was being ridiculous) snapped of me. A REAL MOMENT! Not only was it real, but is such a great environmental portrait too. Just look in my closet! Those clothes! I wish I could look through that closet today. But, at least having this image is a reminder of the time and age of this photo. Guess what? That blue hanger on the ground: I still have it. I have all of my kid hangers. Don’t know why I kept them, but I am using them for my kids today. Kind of neat.

Now that I have stressed to you the importance of keeping your camera out, I also want to suggest to you that YOU should be in your photos too. Don’t always be behind the camera. Hire a photographer (me) or at least put the timer on your camera. Take pictures! Make a yearbook. How cool would it be for your future generations to be able to see your lives in these annual keepsakes? If that is too much for you, hire a photographer (me) to do it for you! You can book your yearbook package with me and I will document 6 different days from your year or 6 events and at the end of the year, you will have yourself a custom yearbook filled with memories and YOU. Not just your family, but YOU too. You won’t need to be the photographer and YOU can actually be a part of the family. A yearbook doesn’t only have to be for a family, either. It could be for a couple in love, a baby’s first year, a restoration project, or even just YOU. Think about it. Consider it. It is a great investment.

Conejo Valley Family photographer – The M Family

This was more than I had expected. Mom went above and beyond to stylize her photo shoot. I just love all of the details from her handmade (by handmade I mean, made by her!) patchwork  blanket and banner, to the vintage milk bottles and neutral balloons to the stylish wardrobe. It was such a perfect set up for the kids who devoured their milk and cookies and frolicked with their balloons. The sun went down fast and it got cold too, so the shoot was cut short. Luckily, there was no shortage of good shots. They are all so comfortable in front of the camera. LOVE THIS FAMILY!

Oh, and I shot a small movie during this session too, but it may be a while before I figure out how to edit it. HA!

My gorgeous sister and her gorgeous girls! Oh, and Patrick too. Actually, Patrick would probably expect a paragraph on his awesomeness. So, here it goes: Patrick is the coolest dude ever. He is a surfer dad who loves his girls so much. He is also a cool uncle to my kids…except for when he is being a “pool bully”. Patrick is very friendly and outgoing. He even once asked Cameron Diaz to watch (and hold) his baby at a restaurant while he went to use the bathroom. His awesomeness is so awesome that I am at a loss for words. How’s that? HAHA!

Ok, so, this was a kind of tricky session in that the baby didn’t nap, Natalia was too preoccupied with the upcoming playtime with her cousins, and the time of day was a bit tough in terms of lighting. All in all, we did get some good ones and I even shot a short movie from the day. Gotta learn how to edit it, if anyone out there has some pointers, I would love to take them. This day was warm and breezy. The leaves were falling like snow when the gusts would come through. Natalia and Patrick tried to catch the leaves as they fell. It was a lot of fun. This session was held at the El Dorado Nature Center in Long Beach. So nice there!

Conejo Valley Family Photographer – Joy and her boys

Back to my favorite place in Newbury Park for this family session that was a blast. The kids LOVE the camera and they love being out in nature. The weather couldn’t have been nicer and I really just feel so comfortable around this family. Joy is one of those people that I feel so fortunate to have in my life, even if we don’t get to talk all that often. To me, she is the epitome of her name. She makes you feel welcome, important, and happy. She is always so positive and is such an amazing mother. She is actually a super mom. NO JOKE! She runs her own daycare business and still has energy to care for her boys and take them to all of their sports and activities AND even take care of herself. Joy and Chris are such a sweet couple and they seem to have such a deep respect for each other. They all seem to have a lot of fun together and they really make a good family.

The boys were so entertaining. Both goofballs while they preformed for the camera, but also lots of genuine fun between the two of them. They used sticks for guns (but were not violent with them), they climbed trees, they pretended they were airplanes taking flight down the trail, and they even pretended they were zombies. I loved watching them and getting a glimpse of what it will be like for my son Blake (2) when he is their age. Lots of exploring and imagination coming my way. I love it!

Kathleen is Amelie’s Kindergarten teacher. We just love her so much and I felt so honored when she asked me to do her holiday pictures. Her husband Stewart just adores her, but she does have some competition. Their puppy Jessie is often in the spotlight. Kathleen would probably say that it’s ALL Jessie in the spotlight. But, ya know, this is one special dog. There aren’t many dogs that, when I meet them, I just start kissing immediately. She seriously is perfect. I had the worst experience as a puppy owner, but meeting Jessie made me think that it was a fluke. Probably not, though. Jessie is the fluke, I think.

We had a nice walk to the lake and the fall weather was just so nice. Down by the water, we met a rude swan. She would hiss at us. It was crazy. But, she was just hungry and wanted crackers. This was just a nice and relaxed session. More traditional and less documentary, but fun nonetheless. I really enjoyed getting to know Kathleen better and spending time in her home. She even had us watch about 15 minutes of  mega mind on their 3D TV! If you have never seen something on a 3D TV, you should! IT IS SO COOL!!!

Newbury Park Family Photographer – The Y Family

I don’t think you could have a more photogenic couple of girls. Or better yet, have a couple of girls love the camera as much as these two did! We spent the late afternoon taking a walk on my favorite trail. The girls were so sassy in their cute outfits, but also embraced their surroundings and ended up collecting acorns and sticks and leaves. It was a lot of fun documenting their discoveries. Mom and dad are just so in love with these two and really wanted the shoot to be mostly about them. The girls were so sweet to each other the entire time, it was heart melting. When I came home to my little squabblers, I showed them the images of the girls. I made sure to point out the sweetness and kindness that they shared with one another. Well, rubbing off on my girls didn’t seem to work, but it was worth a try, right?

Los Angeles Photographer – D3 Publisher Holiday Shoot

When I was asked to do a photo shoot for a holiday card for D3, I was a bit intimidated. Although I have a lot of experience photographing pets, I wasn’t sure that I could offer a studio feel for their corporate holiday card. I use natural light and was going to need to use flash, and I was going to have to work with posing dogs rather than chasing them around. But, I am so glad I took the job! There was plenty of available artificial light there for me to shoot without flash and the dogs were AMAZING!!! Here is the custom holiday card I designed along with other shots from the session.
