Newbury Park Family Photographer – Three Amazing Kids

Here are some kids that I am in awe over. They are AMAZING! I know this family through my daughter Amelie’s school and what lucky people we are to know them. Not only are they the nicest family, but when my daughter Amelie gets together with Dominic (the brother in the plaid) they are like two peas in a pod. Amelie is more on the weird side while Dominic is more silly, but they get along so great. Dominic is such a sweet and kind person. They totally have my permission to get married when they grow up. I just had to put that out there. 😉

These sibling blow me away. They have so much love and respect for each other. The boys are twins. Jeremy in the red shirt is autistic. I had no idea what to expect from our shoot because I didn’t know Jeremy very well. I worried that my camera in his face might overwhelm him. What a foolish fear for me to have had! He was SO MUCH FUN! He was full of smiles and watching him see the world was such an honor. The way his siblings interact with him melted my heart. I really can’t gush over them enough. Big sister Angelina is an angel. Seriously, her name is PERFECT for her. These kids must make their parents so proud and I have no doubt that they will be amazing adults in the future. This shoot was for Dad’s birthday present. I feel so honored to have been chosen for this job.

Show Your Walls At Home Some Love!

I have lived in my house for 5 years with pretty much BLANK walls. I finally found a lab that offers something super cool. CIRCLE PRINTS!!! So fun and I feel safe with them on my walls because they are very lightweight. They are mounted on white foam board and I just bought some velcro to stick them onto my walls. So easy! The largest size that I had ordered is 12 inches in diameter and the smallest was 6 inches in diameter.

I want you to have some circle prints too! If you book a shoot with me before March 31st, you will get 3 circle prints added to your photo package (any size up to 12″ valued at $150). To break it down, you get an on location photo shoot for one hour, a private online gallery with the ability to download images sized up to 4×6, a 5×5 or 5×7 photo book with all of the images from the gallery, 3 circle prints up to 12″, and a $50 print credit. Please take a look at my package pricing here.

I also have ONE more offer for you. I really love doing annual projects. You can have one circle print a month and collect 12 over the course of a year! I am currently offering an annual deal where you get 1 mini session (30 minutes) a month for 12 months for $125 a month. I have 2 spots left on that deal. OR if you would rather book my Yearbook deal where I get to document your year more thoroughly, I will include 12 circle prints in that package up to 16″. You can view my yearbook package by clicking on the package pricing link above.

I hope you all like these prints as much as I do. Contact me soon to book your session! Email me at angie@angelavaleriephotography.com

Changes and Growth and What Matters Most

I have entered year 4 of this business and I am finding more about what it is that I want to give rather than what I want to receive. The number one thing that I want to give, is to give clients what they want. Through that, I have learned that I am not the right fit for every client, and through that, I have become very much okay with not being the right fit. I want EVERY SINGLE PERSON that chooses to invest in a photo session to get exactly what they want from it. I am just thrilled that they see the importance of preserving memories through photographs enough to invest in a photographer, even if I’m not the photographer that they choose. There have been many times where I was the chosen photographer and I was clearly not the right fit at all. Both parties, client and myself just didn’t see it coming, I guess. I have learned that my communication as to what I offer and how I work needs to be more clear. I am working on that and with the help of this blog post and blog posts in my near future, I hope to become very clear about what I do.

I am so thankful for all of my clients old and new and even my future clients for helping me build this little business. It has been a learning experience as I go along and I have grown so much. Lots of growing pains and plenty of room for more growth and learning. I look forward to it. In this process of growing, I have finally found what I have been searching for in regards to my brand.

I think most of you know that I strive to take real life pictures like this:

IMG_2399 copy

And I get a lot of people who want more staged photos like this:

IMG_3594swapCROP4And YES, those are MY kids with my nieces! I took this picture because frankly, OLD PEOPLE LOVE IT! It’s a fantastic gift for grandparents. This image above took HOURS to produce. Ok, I may be exaggerating, but I am not a patient person in post production and this shot required 4 head swaps! I am not a comedian (although I often think that I am pretty hilarious) and most of the time I am lucky if one kid comes close to looking into the camera with a giggle. I achieved this image by becoming a magician and photoshopping the heck out of it. Was it the best time of my life? Not at all! I love what I do, I love photoshop, I love new challenges, but head swapping in photoshop is exactly the opposite of what I believe in: REAL LIFE. Also, I have 3 kids that got robbed of this time that I spent making a “picture perfect”. Plus, all sorts of other things got neglected like cleaning, cooking, editing, client correspondence. This image caused neglect in my life. HAHA! I am being “funny” but you get the idea. Not only do I strive for real life, I strive for imperfection because it’s what inspires me most.

I would prefer a forced image to look like this:

IMG_4483 copy

The awkwardness wins for me. How photogenic are my kids, btw??? HAHA! It’s an old photo, but one that I LOVE!

So as I sit here on a tangent about MY preference in photos, I am arriving to a point that I am about to make. A photographer is an artist of sorts and artists thrive on inspiration. I am inspired by real life and imperfection. When a child is not allowed to get dirty at a shoot, a bit of my motivation gets hindered and my spirit just gets sad. I totally get it, though, why they can’t get dirty. You have invested in nice clothes for the photo shoot that you have invested in. It’s hard to see money get spent on something that might get ruined. But, you are preventing real awesome moments to happen by not allowing your child to get dirty. Just saying. Oh, and that’s really not my point entirely. My point is: In the future, I will value the images that were real because it will show me how life was at that time. It’s so easy to forget who these little people were after they become big and start getting their grown up teeth and/or their sassy attitudes.

I mean really! How could Eloise go from this sweet cuddly shark (snapshot alert):IMG_0137

To DUCK FACE????

IMG_7017 copy

Okay, that duck face image is funny but she has been banned from making that face for pictures ever again.

The thing that I have been striving for in regards to my brand is simple. Taking story telling REAL LIFE images during a shoot and then putting the edited images into something tangible. A book. A small book that can sit on your coffee table or sit in your bookshelf for you to take down and look through and relive the moments. A book for you to put into the hands of a loved one who can enjoy looking through a book versus your online gallery. You want to hear the sad story of how I got to this realization? I am a victim of digital image hoarding. I realized one day that I was on facebook looking through baby pictures of my kids! FACEBOOK!!! I have not one album. It’s true. Just last year I made time for an album of my 2012 instagram pictures. My very first family album and it’s instagram. At least it’s something, but still. Just a year and a half ago I put up our very first framed picture. It’s not a nice framed picture, it’s one of those Aaron Bros collage frames.  That is all I have on my walls at this very second. But, the good news is, while I currently haven’t found a way to make time to put together my family albums from 2006 to present, I have finally bought photos for my walls and as soon as I get them up there, I will be sure to share before and after images. Now, I am not assuming that your issues are the same as mine. But, I can’t help but feel a sense of guilt when you choose to purchase digital images through me. I worry that those memories will get lost on your hard drives. Not just that, but, did you know that some computers are being made without CD/DVD trays? DVDs are becoming obsolete. I only sell the DVD because of that need to provide you with a tangible item, but in reality, I could save money and just give you an online gallery where you can download your images in minutes. I don’t want to do that. It doesn’t feel right. So, being that it’s 2014, and I have procrastinated thus far in announcing my changes to you, please take a minute to view my new packages and pricing.

Now I have confused you. Why am I giving you digital negatives? Well, they are low resolution and it’s because I don’t want to sell you 4×6 prints anymore. I want you to have those digitals to print on your own, put on your holiday cards, and mail to family. I want to encourage you to buy the big prints for your walls. I don’t want you to buy the big prints through Costco or Wallgreens or Shutterfly because they are not archival quality and they look TERRIBLE! They really do. As soon as I “FIND TIME” I will be sure to make prints at each lab and show you a comparison so that you can see the difference. Why big prints? Well, why invest in the photo shoot and then have nothing to show for it? I can’t even begin to tell you how many clients have walked away from their shoots with nothing because they didn’t use their print credits. That is another reason why my prices went up. To allow me to provide products with the packages that I offer. I can’t handle the guilt of getting paid for something that, yes I worked for, but where the client walks away with nothing. No thank you, I need to give you SOMETHING! 🙂

Now this post is getting long and I will need to touch on some other things at a later time. But I hope that you now understand where I am coming from and why. Also, I APPRECIATE my clients and referrals so much! THANK YOU! If you were a client of mine and are reading this, please expect an exciting email from me soon ;).

WISHING YOU Peace, Health, and Happiness for 2014!

❤ Angie

Ventura County Newborn Photographer – Baby Connor

Meet Connor! He is the son of a pilot and flight attendant. He is a baby that was waited for and he is a baby that is VERY loved. He has the sweetest grandma and the cutest (but a little stressed out) cat. Connor is such a well behaved happy thing, too. Oh and hungry, but aren’t all newborns? He didn’t cry much, but is certainly a mama’s boy and when she would pass him off, he would protest a little. I am privileged to have met him and photograph him not only because he is super sweet, but also because he is my sister’s new nephew. I can’t wait to see him again at family functions and see how much he has changed. Don’t forget to watch the little movie that I made from the day. A short film is included in all newborn sessions. 🙂

Southern Calfornia Story Telling Photography – The Nelke Family

This blog post is LONG overdue. I was so booked up last fall that when I shot this session of my sister and her family, I told her that she would have to wait to get the images and that she would just have to pick from un-edited pictures to have me edit quickly and email to her for her Christmas card. Well, things didn’t start slowing down until about now! Better late than never, though. 🙂 I loved this shoot even on such a gloomy day. We just had fun at the beach and marina. Anywhere where kids can run and play is fun, really (although there was no running at the marina. That wouldn’t be safe). Poor baby Camille was coming down with a fever and through all of the smiles, some cranky and sad came out, but not much. She was a trooper especially since we didn’t know she was feverish until after the shoot.

When our shoot started, there was another family photo shoot going on. To my surprise, they happened to know my sister and her husband. It was a totally different type of photo shoot and I posted a small view of what it was like for the other photographer. It’s the last image in this post.

And then there they are. The large family all dressed in white shirts and blue jeans. They seemed like a totally awesome family and they probably got fantastic photos that they LOVE.  I just want you to know that this is NOT what I do. I need to tell a story even if there are some posed family pictures during the shoot, the majority of the shoot is documentary. I will document your time because that is what I feel is important in family photography. That’s all. The end. 🙂IMG_7662

Camarillo Family Photographer – 9 month old Grace

Oh boy this post isn’t short because I loved this session and I love this baby so much. Little Grace has my heart.  She is so sweet and ADORABLE! She is funny too. She amazes me. She is so little and standing and walking with a walker and she is also so bright. She would probably call me out on that run on sentence that I just typed. HAHA! No, really though, she is incredibly bright. I am so excited for her upcoming one year shoot AND birthday party. I really lucked out with being this family’s photographer. They are awesome.

So, for this shoot, we decided to document some of the things that define Grace at 9 months old and also we decided to have her experience her first visit to the park. It was a bit chilly out but she was a trooper. She was so serious when we put her in the swing. Then her face started turning red and she sandwiched her thumb between her fingers. She wasn’t so sure. But after a few swings she was enjoying it. But, there was more to explore and she did some exploring. A first trip down the slide, some leaf handling, and some good old fashion grass pulling were on her agenda.

I really love to document a baby’s first year. I’m pretty sure it’s my favorite. But, it’s not only because I love babies so much, it’s because I get to witness the parents loving their babies so much. Parenthood is such an amazing gift and I feel like the luckiest person in the world that I am one. I also feel so lucky to be able to re-live the early days, the feeling of being a new parent through my clients. I really miss the early days and it is so refreshing to be reminded of what it was like.

Newbury Park Newborn Photographer – Baby P

This little baby girl has the BEST hair! I just couldn’t get enough of it. She is so sweet and so cute. I am very happy that I got to meet her and her awesome parents. This shoot was great because it was a little of everything. A newborn session, family session, and a tiny bit of documentary. Their dog is a recent rescue and is the sweetest thing. So gentle and loving.  There was limited light in the house and it was a rainy day, but we got some great window light and then when the rain stopped we went to an outdoor location for some family shots.

West Hills Family Photographer – The P Family

This session was awesome because it was full of activities. We started with story time in the family room. What I didn’t expect were dogs to be a part of the session and I am SO happy they came inside and joined us. The sweetest dogs ever! Love them and they LOVE their family so much, it shows. After story time, we walked to the park where there was some bubble blowing, some jungle gym, some nature discoveries for the baby, and some standing (which was new) for the baby. The kids were great the entire time and even indulged us in a posed family picture towards the end of the shoot. After the park we walked back home for a few last shots in their backyard. What I loved about this shoot (besides the fact that it was a story telling session) was that they included their nephew (cousin to the girls) and that was just so great. Family is MORE than your own unit and they really demonstrated that.

Thousand Oaks Documentary Family Photographer – A Double Baptism

I must admit, I was very nervous to photograph this baptism. The one and only other baptism I photographed was not my best work…then again…it was a long time ago and I have come a long way since then. BUT, it still didn’t help my nerves. My challenges from the first baptism I shot was that there were people crowding around and I couldn’t get in a good enough position to get good shots. Then, it was over. SO QUICK! I also didn’t treat it like an event because it was my niece’s baptism and I had my own kids with me. But, still, the memory of failure sits deep inside. This baptism on the other hand was PERFECT! No crowding and more space. The girls were amazing. Not a whimper out of them and the light was good enough to shoot without flash. I used my flash on a few images (not featured) that I actually liked. But, overall, natural light is what I fancy. The baby was wearing mom’s baptism dress from when she was a baby! How perfect is that? And sentimental. I hope that the girls will pass it down to their girls and so on. So sweet. I don’t think I will be as nervous for the next baptism to come my way. I look forward to it!
